The first thing that
comes to people’s minds, when they think of Portugal, is
the Algarve, Lisbon and Porto. However, the country is
much more than that; the interior has a low population
density and is therefore often untouched. During the
trip to Santiago de Compostela the cyclist will pass the
Serra de Estrela (mountain range of the stars) and Serra
de São de Mamede, the lowlands of the Alentejo, the
Douro valley and much more. Many old traditions and
habits are still alive.
May is a beautiful month to discover the East of
Portugal by bicycle, the nature is still very green and
in blossom, at this time of the year with a temperature
that is pleasant for cycling.
The
total distance from Faro (PT) to Santiago de Compostela
(ES) is about 1,000 km. Each day you'll travel
90 km in average. You'll discover the eastern part of
Portugal, probably the most beautiful part of the
country, which is not exploited by tourists. Once you've
arrived in Santiago de Compostela you'll receive your
credential as prove of completing the trip.
You will
cycle 13 days of the 17 days trip. The first night
you'll stay over in the Algarve. The trip starts May 2nd
and it ends May 18th.
After passing the first hills in the Algarve you'll
cross the green lands of the Alentejo to Serra de São
Mamede. The day after will be your first relaxing and
enjoying day. This is an excellent day to make a hike in
the hills with a local guide. Then, the trip goes via
Serra de Estrela to the Douro valley. In Peso da Régua,
close to the Spanish border there is time for a second
day of resting. From here you'll cycle 4 more days to
Santiago de Compostela.
